Understanding VLT: How Dark Is Too Dark
Film is rated by Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the percentage of light that passes through. A 70% VLT film is barely noticeable and mainly blocks UV and heat; a 20% VLT film reads as a visibly darker, more private window. Most residential living spaces land between 35% and 50% VLT, keeping the room bright while cutting glare and heat meaningfully. We bring physical film samples to your consultation so you can see exactly how each option looks against your own glass, in your own light, before committing.
Film Types: Dyed, Metalized & Ceramic
Dyed film is the most affordable option and handles glare and privacy well, but offers the least heat rejection and can fade over many years of direct sun. Metalized film rejects significantly more heat and resists fading longer, though it can interfere with cell signal near the glass. Ceramic film is the premium option: the best heat rejection and UV protection available, no signal interference, and the least visible tint shift over time — the film we recommend most often for south- and west-facing rooms that get hit hardest by afternoon sun.
